Cinesnack
A mobile movie companion app for snack lovers.
Introduction
Cinesnack wanted to revolutionize the cinema experience by allowing users to pre-order snacks and skip the line. We were tasked with creating a seamless mobile experience that feels at home in a dark theater.
Project Overview
The Problem
Moviegoers struggle to order food in dark theaters without disrupting others, leading to long lines and missed movie moments.
The Goal
To create a "dark-mode first" ordering experience that simplifies the process, reduces wait times, and respects the cinema environment.
User Research: Pain Points
We conducted interviews to understand the frustrations of moviegoers.
Time
Working young adults need to spend time somewhere else
Space
Going in and out of the auditorium won’t help the users to enjoy the experience
Human side
The need to be served when feeling it, can’t be ignored among young adults
Technical
A non-considered order due to some problems on the app is not good for the reputation of the app
Usability Study: Parameters
Participants
5 users recruited from local cinema lines.
Mixed technical proficiency.
Methodology
Unmoderated usability study.
Task: Order a popcorn combo.
Measured time on task and error rate.
Session length: 15 minutes.
Usability Findings
Contrast is Key
Users struggled to read grey text in low light. We increased contrast ratios significantly.
The Challenge
The main challenge was to design a dark-mode friendly interface that wouldn't disturb other moviegoers. It needed to be extremely easy to navigate in low light conditions while still showcasing the food appetizingly.
Key Learnings & Outcomes
We delivered a sleek, high-contrast dark mode UI that increased concession sales during pilot testing. The simplified checkout flow meant users spent less time in lines and more time enjoying the movie.
